Project BRIEF
PROJECT BRIEF

As the Senior Product Designer at Hero, I was responsible for all things visual design and user experience, as they related to Hero’s B2C web and mobile application products (in conjunction with the software + hardware relationship to their main, physical hardware product — the Hero Pill Dispenser device) as well as the rollout of their B2B Enterprise platform.

I was personally responsible for designing, prototyping and user testing Hero’s very first interface design for their iOS application, the user interface on the hardware device and an Enterprise medication adherence monitoring dashboard.

PROJECT GOALS
Project GOALS

The goals of our Product Design team were: 1. Establish a scalable, reusable design system for all of our digital platforms to create familiarity, consistency and familiarity when moving through the suite of Hero software products. 2. Ensure usability was paramount throughout the design system — as our users were mostly 50 or older and had a myriad of accessibility issues ranging from poor eyesight, cognitive impairments and colorblindness. 3. Get hands-on with our existing and current users to ensure that we were designing feature sets and interfaces that were meaningful, intentional and solved crucial problems for Hero’s widespread user base. This included weekly user interviews, quick-and-dirty user testing sessions, iteration early and often and aggregated data from user testing sessions to validate and invalidate design decisions.

Medication, managed.
DESIGN PROCESS
DESIGN PROCESS

Starting with an MVP mobile application, we aimed to have our design system guided by the ones who matter most: our users. As a small startup, we had the luxury of being able to reach out to our initial users and customers to gain valuable insights into what was working for them, what wasn’t working, frustration points and opportunities to improve the design language, interfaces and user experience as a whole.

We had a tall task ahead of us: finding out how we can minimize friction of an already-complicated user flow schema traversing between the relationship of physical hardware device paired with a mobile app. Through quick, rapid-fire whiteboarding sessions and dirty prototypes, we are able to get our initial flows and navigation schematics in front of actuals users straight away. Using the insights we gathered, we found opportunities to simplify the experience based on user feedback. Once that was aggregated to find commonalities, we iterated until we found success.
